HND Lesson: Glass Design-Davidoff Cool Water

The new Cool Water concept is a lighter which conveyed the message of “Ignites the masculinity” and a homage to Davidoff early years product. The new bottle is in square shape as it symbolized the concept of simple and mature.

The crystal cut pattern resembled the essence of still and intelligence present in man. It is also clean cut and direct, this represents the condense of man and the fragrance itself. In the middle of crystal cut pattern, there is a symbolic cut that represents the wave pattern. It embraces the philosophy from original Cool Water that resembles the power of ocean and wave of action.

HND Lesson (Final): Product Design- STEP

Come in a package. STEP is a bedroom furniture set with the combination of ash wood and stainless steel tube. It consist of shelves, cloth hanger and a mirror and user need to assembly and install them by own. It’s not only serving as a room furniture, life motivator but also decoration, life companion and self-esteem. User can freely arrange the furniture set to best suite his/her style and taste. 

This furniture idea also successfully qualified in semifinal of MIFF 2015 competition. (Malaysia International Furniture Fair)

Public Phone Booth’s Future Material

This article will describe material replacement or improvement on public phone booth based on the problem facing by current public phone booth in Malaysia.

Analysis

Plastic and aluminium, both materials has common problem caused by human. Both of the materials have the properties of slippery surface, which is usually good with attaching object. Therefore, being targeted as object to attach with sticky notes. Concrete usually has rough surface prevented sticky notices attached on it. However, it lacks aesthetic value when compared to aluminium. Plastic is considered the best material as the panel because of its economical price and lightweight properties. Fiberglass is by far the most suitable plastic to make the panel of phone booth because its strength and stability against weather.

Problem Need to Solve

The main problem need to be solved is vandalism caused by sticky notes. Majority of phone booths are still protected against damage from impact and environment issue. This is because majority of phone booth is made by fiberglass, which is strong and more stable than other plastic, and has a longer life-span from discoloration. As a conclusion, the major problem faced by phone booth is its surface that is attachable with other object.

Solution

The solution to solve the problem mentioned above is to change the surface properties of material used to build phone booth. In order to prevent object stick on material, the material itself should have tendency to prevent object from stick on it or a rough and irregular surface so that the sticky note cannot paste flat on the surface.

The Stand of Public Phone Booth

Common found public phone booth on this project often made up by a payphone surrounded by a shelter and supported upright by an aluminium (possible aluminium alloy) or concrete stand. An aluminium stand is often designed in a simple form while concrete stand may be engraved with pattern.

i. Aluminium

Aluminium is a metal with corrosion resistant, shiny silver surface, soft and ductile. It can be alloyed to improve its strength. Pure aluminium is often extracted from bauxite. Aluminium is lightweight and easy to form shape, which sometimes a better material than steel. It is corrosion free, which is suitable to use at outdoor. The weakness of aluminium is its physical strength. However it can be improved when fusing with alloying agent.

ii. Concrete

Concrete is a composite material composed of coarse granular material (the aggregate or filler) embedded in a hard matrix of material (the cement or binder) that fills the space among the aggregate particles and glues them together. It is very strong to withstand heavy impact, weather resistant and less costly. The main weakness of concrete is its weight, low tensile strength and it can crack if shrinkage occurred.

The following article is about the study of payphone booth in Malaysia.


Outdoor public phone booth in Malaysia mostly can be found in big city or small town. It is usually designed in partially enclosure shelter. The number of public phone booth in Malaysia is decreasing due to the rise of usage of mobile phone, which make public phone unlikely often used by citizen nowadays. Most of the public payphone found are branded helo, a product by Pernec, a corporation leads in telecommunication and information technology. Other phone booth brand included TM (Telekom Malaysia), a government-run telecommunication company.

Happy Chinese New Year. This year is the year of horse according to the Chinese lunar calendar. Therefore, like last year, I came out with my own design or art related to Chinese New Year. Horse represents the spirit of adventurous, luck as well as diligent.
