TALK the talk: Chair and Its Type

WHAT IS CHAIR:

A chair is furniture made up of a seat, legs, back and often arms and designed to accommodate one person. Sofa, coach, beanbag, stool or swing are some example of furniture that similar to chair, they can refer as a part of chair family even though some people might differentiate them form a typical chair. 

Differentiate chair with another chair-similar furniture: 

Stool

Stool is a chair without a back, and often has long legs. It also accommodate one person. The different between chair and stool is the present of backrest.

Sofa/Coach

Sofa, love-seat  coach or bench are kind of chair that designed to accommodate more than one person. There are Often pair with cushion. Their different between chair is size and function.

Beanbag 

Beanbag or beanbag chair is a seal bag containing bean or PVC pallet used as a seat or cushion. It has the most obvious different with chair.Beanbag does not have a specific back and leg. It can fix in more than one person and it is flexible to change shape. 

DEFINE THE TYPE OF CHAIR

Despite of thousands of different kind of chair designed into this world. In this research, chair type is being categorized by its function and specific setting place. Chair generally can be group into two major groups, a chair with armrest or without an armrest. The categorization of chair type is very elusive. It is depending on a person’s judgement in different perspective such as design, function, shape or specific setting.

i) CHAIR DESIGNED FOR RECLINING
Below shows two types of chairs which bear some similarity to sofa but technically there are not consider as sofa. Both furniture is larger than standard chair size and designed for a complete leg rest. Besides that, both of them normally set in indoor area.

Chaise Longue

A chair with or without arms for reclining, having a seat lengthened to form a complete leg rest and sometimes an adjustable back. (The Free Dictionary, 2013). It has a long seat which is designed for reclining, some of it may looks like sofa, but chaise longue only accommodate to one person. It is normally set in indoor area like bedroom or living room.

Chair & A Half

A chair and a half is an over-sized chair that is wider than a standard chair, but narrower than a loveseat. (Abe Abbas, n.d ). It is still accommodate to one person. Chair and a half is commonly placed at living room or bedroom.

ii) CHAIR DESIGNED TO A DESK

Below shows two types of chairs which are designed accompanied to a table or desk. Both chairs are specific furniture to an area.

Dining Chair

Dining chair refers to any chair used at the dining table. Dining chair is not limited to design and mechanism. Stack chair, foldable chair are sometime being used as a dining chair.It normally comes in a set with the dining table. It is chair set at dining area such as restaurant, home, café, etc.

Office Chair

Office chair is used during working or at the desk. Typically office chair has wheels and adjustable back or seat. The design brought convenient as well as comfort for white collar while working in a stress environment.

iii) CHAIR DESIGNED TO SAVE STORAGE SPACE

Below shows chairs that designed to solve storage saving place.

Deck Chair(Folding Chair)

It is a chair that can fold flat. It is usually light and portable. Some example of folding chair is deck chair, director chair and butterfly chair. The image above shows a deck chair which is designed for reclining, however it belongs to the group of folding chair which the main target is to solve the problem with space. Folding chair does not have a specific setting place as it can be set anywhere when permanent seat is not available.

Stacking Chair

Stacking chair is chair that can stack compactly on top of each other of the same kind or design. This chair is commonly used in classroom and event party. Same as folding chair, this chair is designed to solve storage space problem.

iv) CHAIR DESIGNED TO HAVE MOTION

Rocking Chair

It is a chair mounted on two curved pieces, usually made of wood, that sit beneath the legs of the chair. (WiseGeek, n.d). This chair produces a slight rocking action when pressure is applied. Rocking chair can set in indoor or outdoor area. Most of the time, we can spot some  rocking chair being placed at porch or deck of a house.

Swing Chair

A swing chair is a type of furniture with a hanging seat. The seat usually has a back which user can lean on it. Swing chair is smaller than garden swing in playground. Swing chair is normally placed at outdoor like deck, patio or porch area of a home or it is being kept indoor like bedroom or living room.
